Rebellious artists have always been a part of the tapestry of the cultures that have led the world into bold new areas of art, and Italy has certainly had her share!   Baroque painter and poet Salvator Rosa (1615 – March 15, 1673) was Italy’s 17th century rebel , and he is being currently featured in the Kimbell Art Museum’s exhibit “Salvator Rosa:  Bandits, Wilderness, & Magic”  ~ the first ever major exhibition of his art held in the United States.

The curator of the exhibit will help us get to know Rosa better at this Pasta & Pizza Night lecture.  Known for his landscapes and their suggestive light effects, Rosa explored dark and brooding subjects that ran against mainstream tastes at the time.  He charmed noted artists, noblemen and princes alike, only to spurn them and make them enemies through his biting satirical poems.  Powerfully inventive, he created some of the  most evocative paintings of his age ~ the aforementioned landscapes, portraits, scenes featuring witchcraft and magic, altarpieces, and subjects drawn from classical literature.

The lecture, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will be presented for free, with antipasto available for purchase beforehand and pasta and pizza available for purchase at the conclusion of the presentation.
